Listen Deeply – a Contemplative Prayer exercise

The practice (grace) of seeing God in and through all things will serve us well in season and out. I invite you to sit quietly and turn your thoughts to Jesus.  In this contemplative prayer exercise relax and picture Jesus and let that image come to rest in your heart.  This is a gentle practice and a work of the Spirit so there is no need to "try hard."  It is something that we rest into.

Let us listen deeply.

"Listen to your life.
See it for the fathomless mystery that it is.
In the boredom and pain of it
no less than in the excitement and gladness:
touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it
because in the last analysis all moments are key moments,
and life itself is grace."

- Frederick Buechner

Don't be concerned with distracting thoughts.  When you become aware that you have been distracted, simply turn again to Jesus in your heart.  To return after being distracted is also the gift of God working in you!

Without analyzing or over-thinking become aware of reoccurring thoughts, feelings, pictures or scripture verses.  Return to your focus to Jesus.

When it seems right to do so, write down those thoughts, feelings, pictures or scriptures.

Spend some time in prayer and ask Holy Spirit to speak to you about these. Ask how you are being asked to respond.  Again, resist the temptation to try too hard but rest into the love of God.

Write down what you're sensing, and don't be afraid to hold it lightly and offer it for future discernment.

End your time with a prayer of gratitude.
