{"id":10242,"date":"2018-10-18T14:25:49","date_gmt":"2018-10-18T14:25:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iamsignificant.ca\/?p=10242"},"modified":"2018-10-20T15:34:59","modified_gmt":"2018-10-20T15:34:59","slug":"hell-difference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iamsignificant.ca\/home\/featured\/hell-difference\/","title":{"rendered":"A Hell of a Difference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong>Once upon a time<\/strong>, there lived a woman who wished she could understand the difference between Heaven and Hell.\u00a0 She petitioned God for such an experience, and one day God came to her in a dream.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">God said to the woman, \u201cI have heard your prayer, and I am willing to grant your request.\u00a0 I will show you Hell first.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">At once, they entered a grand dining hall.\u00a0 The tables filled with a vast assortment of the finest foods, displayed with all the grandeur of the finest kingdoms.\u00a0 Her attention then turned to those sitting around the tables.\u00a0 They were weeping, profoundly sad, malnourished and physically pathetic. \u00a0 With such a magnificent feast before them, it was very odd that everyone was sickly thin, and no one ate.\u00a0 It was then she noticed each of them had a large 3-foot long spoon.\u00a0 The people could easily reach the food but because of the length of the spoon, it was impossible for them to get the spoon to their mouths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">\u201cOh Father, how sad\u201d\u00a0 the woman sighed.\u00a0 &#8220;To be surrounded by so much, such abundance and yet to starve.\u00a0 Indeed, this must be Hell.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">\u201cWe shall now see Heaven,\u201d said God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">They entered another majestic dining hall.\u00a0 These tables too filled with a vast assortment of the finest foods, elegantly displayed.\u00a0 Her attention then turned to those sitting around the table.\u00a0 These people were laughing and singing.\u00a0 They were full of joy, pleasantly plump and healthy in stature.\u00a0 It was then she noticed the same peculiar 3 foot long spoons.\u00a0 The very same she had seen while in Hell, and yet these people were happy, rejoicing and evidently well fed and healthy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">She turned to God and said \u201cI am confused. \u00a0 These people here in Heaven have the same peculiar spoons as those who reside in Hell.\u00a0 What is the difference?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">God smiled and said, \u201cThese people have learned that a 3-foot spoon is best-used to feed someone else.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">She then woke up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">(Story adapted from Doorway to the Soul: 52 Wisdom Tales from Around the World,\u00a0 by Elisa Pearmain. Wipf &amp; Stock Pub. 2007)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">______________________________<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong>Is it possible<\/strong> for someone to have so much and still be so poor?\u00a0 Perhaps this is what Jesus meant when He asked &#8220;what does it profit a person to gain the whole world but lose their own soul?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Jesus has a lot to say to us about life in the Kingdom of God. He often illustrates that the hallmark of the Kingdom is love, and this looks a lot like serving and caring for others.\u00a0 Jesus says such scandalous things like to be first we must choose to be last and to love our neighbor as yourself.\u00a0 He speaks of laying down our lives for others including our enemies. Jesus sums it up in John 13 as He encourages his friends to love others as He has loved us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">What might loving as Jesus look like in your home, work, and <\/span>neighbourhood<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">?\u00a0 Who are those hard to love, seemingly undeserving people in your life that you could serve with a 3-foot long heaping spoonful of mercy, compassion, and forgiveness?<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Once upon a time, there lived a woman who wished she could understand the difference between Heaven and Hell.\u00a0 She petitioned God for such an experience, and one day God came to her in a dream.
