{"id":14616,"date":"2019-03-18T21:12:40","date_gmt":"2019-03-18T21:12:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iamsignificant.ca\/?p=14616"},"modified":"2019-03-18T21:17:27","modified_gmt":"2019-03-18T21:17:27","slug":"obedience-a-cheap-substitute-for-love","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iamsignificant.ca\/home\/featured\/obedience-a-cheap-substitute-for-love\/","title":{"rendered":"Obedience versus Surrender"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">There seems to be a principle at work through much of our spiritual life. \u00a0The idea that we will often get t<strong>he lessor with the greater<\/strong>, but we will never get the greater with the lessor. \u00a0 This seems to be the case when we talk about surrender and obedience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Surrender to God is more accurately understood as the giving of oneself as a gift. We give our self freely to God, as a gift as a response\u00a0to the\u00a0experience of God&#8217;s love for us. Sometimes we can find it easier out of religious duty and obligation, to keep the rules. \u00a0We might even be really zealous about the rule keeping but many <\/span>report<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"> being able to do so while maintaining lordship of their own lives. \u00a0This is a sure-fire\u00a0recipe for self-righteousness. \u00a0It is a form of godliness with no power, no genuine transformation. \u00a0Obedience offers ones <em>back<\/em> but not necessarily the deepest places of who we are. \u00a0Love inspired surrender gives ones whole self &#8211; including our heart &#8211; as gift to God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Obedience doesn&#8217;t guarantee surrender, \u00a0but you will find, genuine surrender as a relational gift of love will naturally result in obedience. \u00a0 You see, you get the lessor with the greater.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Surrender to God is more accurately understood as the giving of oneself as gift.
