{"id":14650,"date":"2019-04-30T02:35:17","date_gmt":"2019-04-30T02:35:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iamsignificant.ca\/?p=14650"},"modified":"2019-05-01T16:14:46","modified_gmt":"2019-05-01T16:14:46","slug":"vulnerability-art-of-showing-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iamsignificant.ca\/home\/sole-significance\/vulnerability-art-of-showing-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Vulnerability &#8211; Art of Showing Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">They started their presentation with a 10-minute litany of why they are \u201cf\u2019&#8217;d up,\u201d and this led into a conversation about vulnerability. \u00a0Their\u00a0attempt to connect with us with pseudo vulnerability was less connecting, and more \u2018<em>this person could really benefit from some therapy<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">I think vulnerability is often misunderstood. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For lots of folks, vulnerability is to puke your fears, failure, and shortcoming all over anyone who may listen.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In a sense, it is airing our fears of not being enough and our own self-hatred as an act of piety.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A hangover of an ancient error that God is great and we are shit.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You may remember this as the idea of \u201coriginal sin.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Even worse, I suppose,\u00a0is when we put on a pseudo vulnerability to give the appearance of being vulnerable while not being vulnerable at all.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In short &#8211; it is a show.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is particularly nasty because it is deceptive.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">I am coming to understand vulnerability as <strong>much more about showing up, living into life and living in a way that is more and more in line with greater authenticity<\/strong> \u2014 stepping onto the stage with our best intentions, best thoughts, and hard work \u2014 <em><strong>going<\/strong><\/em><b><i> all in<\/i><\/b>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 Despite being<\/span>\u00a0afraid; afraid of failure, loss, criticism &#8211; that we would step up, take a chance, serve, and innovate.<strong> <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is in showing up that we are practicing vulnerability.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">\u201cThere is only one way to avoid criticism: do nothing, say nothing, and be nothing.\u201d &#8211; Elbert Hubbard<\/span><b><\/b><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Our culture is failure phobic. <b>To fail, to make a mistake opens us to the jackals of the peanut gallery who have never stepped up to do anything new or meaningful<\/b>. The\u00a0trolls, haters and armchair quarterbacks have a digital soapbox and hack away without ever having to risk accountability or to do anything that makes a difference. This behavior cannibalizes the very heart of service, statesmanship, innovation, and creativity &#8211; hell, life itself! <b>These voices have NOT earned the privilege to speak into your life in any way that matters<\/b>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong><u>Hear me! <\/u>\u00a0There is no such thing as perfect people &#8211; certainly not those who have actually attempted anything great. \u00a0<\/strong>We need to ditch the idea that flawless perfection is a requirement &#8211; the BS that tells us before we can try new things, ask new questions, draw different conclusions that we must be perfect ourselves. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>It does require genuine humility &#8211; the ability to speak and live what we believe (experienced to be true) while being open to new information and perspectives. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It takes great vulnerability as we lean into love &#8211; know that as we do we will surely make some mistakes, be misunderstood and fail.<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Story<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A good friend took the helm of a small not-for-profit. \u00a0Lots of good work by her predecessor \u00a0but the organization had become stagnant. \u00a0 One of my friends first order of business was the major fundraiser. \u00a0In the past it had been consistently \u201csuccessful\u201d but my friend, recognizing shifts in media, communication, and giving patterns decided that she would make some significant shifts to the flagship fundraiser. \u00a0She confided in me that she wasn\u2019t sure if it would succeed, and if it flopped it would be catastrophic. \u00a0Yet still, she had a deep nudge that things needed to shift, for the long-term viability of the Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>She worked hard. Very hard. \u00a0She considered the criticism, the warnings, and leveraged them to fortifying her strategy. \u00a0 She executed her plan, navigated the bumps and hiccups, and when the smoke cleared she significantly surpassed the fundraising goal, not to mention previous records.<\/p>\n<p>This is a success story. \u00a0It could have gone the other way too. \u00a0The point is, my friend didn\u2019t phone it in. \u00a0She leaned deeply into her experience and trusted her gut, doing so in a way that was authentically her. \u00a0Was she scared? \u00a0Petrified. \u00a0But here\u2019s the thing, <b>you will never achieve anything remarkable until you show up. \u00a0Moreover, we will never experience the vibrant sense of being alive unless we truly live.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Authentic vulnerability is something we live into.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is smart, heartful risk-taking. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is something that is embraced and practiced in <\/span>the every<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"> day of life.\u00a0<strong>Practicing vulnerability builds capacity within us, and afford us the skill to engage life &#8211;
