{"id":2579,"date":"2016-02-01T13:38:45","date_gmt":"2016-02-01T13:38:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iamsignificant.ca\/?p=2579"},"modified":"2016-06-23T02:04:50","modified_gmt":"2016-06-23T02:04:50","slug":"healthy-boundaries-in-ministry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iamsignificant.ca\/home\/significant-sustenance\/healthy-boundaries-in-ministry\/","title":{"rendered":"Healthy Boundaries in Ministry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">As \u00a0a Ministry leader, \u00a0you know the constant, subtle and not so subtle demands to be personally involved in many of the different activities of Church. \u00a0 <strong>Healthy boundaries in ministry<\/strong> will certainly go a long way in helping you maintain the heart and quality of your ministry, your relationship with God and with your family life. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">I have had numerous opportunities to coach ministry professional in establishing a balance for their ministry and personal life. \u00a0This balance results in greater fruit with greater effectiveness, peace and satisfaction. \u00a0 A key to this balance is understanding ministry goals. \u00a0 Identifying these will tell you a great deal of where you are at and whether or not you are headed towards \u00a0burnout, or burning out the people you minister to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">What activities do you associate with your calling as a Ministry Leader? \u00a0Have you ever stop to consider if you are aiming at the right target?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Activity does not mean effectiveness<\/strong> &#8211; The single greatest plague among North American pastors is &#8220;workaholism&#8217; leading to staggering numbers of pastors and ministry leader burning out, marriages ending in divorce and a host of other issues. \u00a0But it does not need to be that way. \u00a0 Busyness and activity, while a cultural indication of success, can and is often counter productive to spiritual leaders. \u00a0The ability to bring balance to your life with healthy boundaries will afford quality time for the things that matter most!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">This balance is often elusive for many pastors. \u00a0To begin the process ask yourself &#8220;<strong>What matters most?&#8221;<\/strong> \u00a0This will take some time. \u00a0What you are looking for is what matters most to you. \u00a0Beware, there are many people who are too willing to load that list up for you! \u00a0But what do you think? \u00a0What matters most to you, why, and in what ways\u00a0do your actions confirm or deny it? \u00a0 The reality is we do what we value &#8211; what you give your time to reveals what in actuality really matters to you. \u00a0This may be startling and a little uncomfortable but it will help us see a potential disconnect between what we want to value and what we actually do! \u00a0While we may be oblivious to what we value by our actions, it often very apparent to those we serve, especially our families.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>A few thoughts towards healthy boundaries in ministry<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">By prayerfully reflecting upon your daytimer, seeking the feedback from those who know and love you, you can begin to recognize some trends in your life.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">What does my daytimer tell me I value?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">Do these seem like healthy priorities?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">What general area is consuming the most life and yielding the least life?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">In what ways am I working <\/span>within<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"> my gifts?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">What opportunities are there to capitalize on this strength?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">In what ways am I working outside of my gifts?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">Are these tasks necessary and am I the only one who can do them?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">Who around me is better gifted for these tasks and how can I empower them to do so?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Consider Neil Cole&#8217;s statement:<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">&#8220;Don&#8217;t plant churches. Plant Jesus!\u00a0 Plant the Gospel of the Kingdom.\u00a0 Church will grow naturally from that, and reproduce organically. &#8211; Neil Cole. Church 3.0.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">Ask Holy Spirit to help you discern the ways you are planting Jesus in the lives of those you serve, your family and community.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">Ask for discernment of what things, if any at all, inhibit the planting of the Gospel of the Kingdom.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Reflect upon:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Isaiah 40:31<\/strong> &#8211; Yet those who wait for the LORD will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Matthew 11:30<\/strong> &#8211; My yoke is easy, my burden light.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">Take a few minutes with each.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t over analyze it.\u00a0 Maybe repeat each slowly and quietly allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to you and simply respond.\u00a0 Do you feel anxiety? Guilt? Stress?\u00a0 Ask Holy Spirit to help you see the root and ask Him for help.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Possible next steps<\/strong>:<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">Respond to what Holy Spirit places on your heart.
