{"id":2946,"date":"2011-05-19T09:07:02","date_gmt":"2011-05-19T16:07:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iamsignificant.ca\/?p=2946"},"modified":"2021-02-04T18:42:39","modified_gmt":"2021-02-04T18:42:39","slug":"knowing-reason-and-wonder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iamsignificant.ca\/home\/sole-significance\/knowing-reason-and-wonder\/","title":{"rendered":"Knowing: Reason and Wonder"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">&#8220;The stirring in our hearts when watching the star studded sky is something no language can declare.\u00a0 What smites us with unquenchable amazement is not that which we can grasp\u00a0 and are able to convey but that which lies within our reach but beyond our grasp &#8211; the ineffable.&#8221;*<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">I remember first hearing about the Grand Canyon as a kid watching the Brady Bunch &#8211; the two-part episode. Remember?\u00a0 Between the Brady\u2019s, a Bugs Bunny cartoon and some eighth-grade geography, I knew about the Grand Canyon.\u00a0\u00a0 An interesting little factoid: Did you know, in places, the Grand Canyon is a mile deep!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Two years ago, we visited the Grand Canyon.\u00a0\u00a0 I figured we\u2019re going by, may as well stop.\u00a0 As I walked to the rim of the canyon, I wasn\u2019t expecting much &#8211; I\u2019d seen canyons before &#8211; seen one hole in the ground, you\u2019ve seen them all.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t have been more wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">As I reached the rim, my field of vision was filled with this wonder of the world, and I found myself literally speechless!\u00a0 It\u2019s one thing to be told it is a mile deep; it is quite another to stand at the edge and look down at the canyon floor a mile below!\u00a0 It one thing to see pictures, but it is another to see the canyon change before your eyes as the clouds move overhead and the sun moves across the sky.\u00a0 Watching the Brady\u2019s play in the canyon was no substitute for feeling the gritty stone on my fingers, the searing summer heat or experiencing the vastness of the canyon in contrast to my small-ness!\u00a0 The experience with the Grand Canyon enlivened my knowledge about the Grand Canyon.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2955\" style=\"margin-left: 8px; margin-right: 8px;\" title=\"Male feet in hiking boots standing on edge of a cliff\" src=\"http:\/\/iamsignificant.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Fotolia_14254754_XS-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iamsignificantca.lightningbasecdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Fotolia_14254754_XS-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/iamsignificantca.lightningbasecdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Fotolia_14254754_XS.jpg 424w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel suggested there are two ways of knowing and responding to the world: the way of reason and the way of wonder.\u00a0 He suggests that reason seeks to control the world and eliminate mystery, while the way of wonder accepts the mysteries of life and responds with a sense of awe.\u00a0 While I believe he is probably accurate, perhaps rather than seeing reason and wonder as polar opposites, perhaps we can consider the different sides of the same coin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">To enlightenment thinkers, which most of us are products of, anything that can be known is knowable by reason.\u00a0\u00a0 However, some today are discovering there is a more full way of knowing.\u00a0 Many are becoming disillusioned with the enlightenment style of knowing and understand that it still seems to fall short despite the many positive things that have come about.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t do well with mystery or things that are outside its working model of \u201cknowing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">\u201cTaste and see that the LORD is good,\u201d the psalmist encourages in Psalm 34.\u00a0 Jesus spoke in parables, in stories to help us know the Kingdom more deeply.\u00a0 Jesus and His disciples performed miraculous signs and wonders beyond reason or an epistemological way of knowing.\u00a0 Jesus invites us into an experience with the invitation for us all to join Him in the sacrament of bread and wine.\u00a0 These examples, along with others such as prayer,\u00a0 worship, art and music, can be powerful tools for experiencing God, knowing God beyond enlightenment style reason. We also know it is not wise to jettison in a wholesale fashion. All we have learned about knowing from the rational perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">In this regard, David Benner comments in a number of his books, most recently<a title=\"Soulful Spirituality\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Soulful-Spirituality-Becoming-Fully-Deeply\/dp\/1587432978\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> Soulful Spirituality: <\/span><\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Becoming Fully Alive and Deeply Human<\/span>: \u201cReason and wonder are not mutually exclusive &#8211; just distinct.\u201d\u00a0 We can use both in such a way that honours both and know in ways which neither can know independently of the other.\u00a0\u00a0 To this end, reason can inform our experience; and experience can enliven our reason.\u00a0 This provides us with a means of knowing, which is both reason and experiential but transcends them both and presents for us a deeper way of knowing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">As we learn to recognize and understand our experiential ways of knowing, as we learn to trust our \u201cgut\u201d informed with reason without rationalizing them out of hand, we begin to engage life more fully.\u00a0 Living life takes on a new dynamic. We add the dynamic of experience with wonder, intuition and feeling, learning that God can and speaks to us in other ways besides propositional truth and apologetics.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Wonder in Real Life?<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">A posture of wonder and awe adds colour to life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Wonder is a valid response to mystery.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Wonder accepts something for what it is without an attempt to control it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Wonder can be informed by reason but not controlled by it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">It can help us see a situation from a fresh perspective inspiring innovation, creativity, compassion and passion.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">_______________________<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">* Abraham Joshua Heschel, Man is not Alone: A Philosophy of Religion.
