{"id":3712,"date":"2014-04-10T13:11:58","date_gmt":"2014-04-10T13:11:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iamsignificant.ca\/?p=3712"},"modified":"2018-11-05T18:38:52","modified_gmt":"2018-11-05T18:38:52","slug":"how-to-resign-from-a-job-with-grace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iamsignificant.ca\/home\/significant-sustenance\/how-to-resign-from-a-job-with-grace\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Resign from a Job with Grace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">The average worker in North America will have an average of 7-10 different jobs in their lifetime.\u00a0 This works out to an average adult changing jobs about every four years.\u00a0\u00a0 While some of these changes may be due to circumstances beyond our control, there will be those opportunities where you make a deliberate choice to leave one job to take another.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">This requires that we give some thought to the way in which we leave a company.\u00a0 I think for most people; even when leaving a situation which may be unpleasant, there is a graceful way to leave which will demonstrate healthy character on your part and leave potential, beneficial relationships intact even after you have moved on.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s face it &#8211; it is always great to have a former employer willing to say positive things about you to some future employer or even leave the door open for mutually beneficial business relationships in the future.\u00a0 Ideally, you would like your employer and your colleagues to celebrate your achievements and service, grieve you&#8217;re leaving and sincerely wish you the best in your new endeavor.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Here are a few practical tips on how to resign from\u00a0a job gracefully and with integrity:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>Be Classy.<\/strong>\u00a0 This is a conscious decision you make at the beginning.\u00a0 By making a choice that you wish to leave with integrity, you will be deliberate in actions consistent with this goal.<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"283\" height=\"424\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3714\" style=\"width: 283px; height: 424px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; float: right;\" title=\"Fotolia_11155868_XS\" src=\"http:\/\/iamsignificant.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Fotolia_11155868_XS.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iamsignificantca.lightningbasecdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Fotolia_11155868_XS.jpg 283w, https:\/\/iamsignificantca.lightningbasecdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Fotolia_11155868_XS-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>Speak life, not death.<\/strong>\u00a0 Speak gracefully about the supervisors and co-workers you are leaving behind.\u00a0 Even with those who may be difficult to say something positive about.\u00a0 You may have the opportunity to sit down during an exit meeting with a Human Resources representative, and at that time you can tactfully express concerns with systems, process, and opportunities for improvement and training while keeping personalities out of it.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>Talk with your supervisor first<\/strong>.\u00a0 After you have decided to leave a job, it is respectful to inform your supervisor before other staff\/co-workers.\u00a0 Even if your supervisor is <em>a handful<\/em> &#8211; it is showing respect for the position and an opportunity to demonstrate love for those who may not be our favorite people.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>Have a written letter of resignation <\/strong>which clearly states that you are resigning and the effective date \/ last day of work.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t need to tell them why and you certainly don&#8217;t need to rant.\u00a0 It is not the place to vent your frustrations.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>Give appropriate notice<\/strong>.\u00a0 The rule of thumb is to give the amount of time which is the typical amount of time between paydays.\u00a0 If you are paid weekly, give a weeks notice, bi-weekly give two weeks.\u00a0 Your new employer certainly will <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">understand the need to give proper notice.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>Finish well<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 It is often hard to continue to work hard knowing that in two weeks time you are leaving for greener pastures.\u00a0 You will begin to notice you are slowly removed from the loop, the emails and telephone calls start to taper off as others make the necessary adjustment for your departure.\u00a0 This can be a strange time, and the tendency may be to take longer lunch hours and breaks, show up late and leave early.\u00a0 As best as you can, try to maintain a solid work ethic.\u00a0 Truth be told, you are still being paid, and it is graceful to provide the same effort in the last two weeks as you have previously.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">To resign from a job with grace and integrity is important as it reflects your own character and self-respect, and this will go a long way to ensuring that you keep the good name you have worked so hard for.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t know what your future holds and you may need to work with your previous employer in the future &#8211;
