{"id":3726,"date":"2017-01-07T11:09:34","date_gmt":"2017-01-07T11:09:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iamsignificant.ca\/?p=3726"},"modified":"2017-01-08T01:11:25","modified_gmt":"2017-01-08T01:11:25","slug":"keep-your-goals-to-yourself","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iamsignificant.ca\/home\/significant-sustenance\/keep-your-goals-to-yourself\/","title":{"rendered":"Keep your Goals to Yourself?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Conventional wisdom tells us it is a good idea to share our goals with others for the purpose of vocalizing them and soliciting help with accountability to help keep us on track. But Derek Sivers suggests this may, in fact, be counter productive to realizing your goals.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Sivers argues based\u00a0on the work of social scientists over the\u00a0last 80 years for a\u00a0phenomenon called <strong><em>Social Reality<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 In a 2009 study, 163 individuals were asked to write down a goal, and they asked half of them to share with the group what they had written.\u00a0 The other half didn\u2019t have the opportunity to do so.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Participants were the given an assignment to help them do some thinking and planning for their goal, and they had up to 45 minutes to do so.\u00a0 What they discovered is fascinating.\u00a0 The group who did not have the opportunity to share their goal with the group used the entire 45 minutes and when asked how they felt about their goal they all said they had a lot to do \/ a long way to go.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0The group who did have the opportunity to share their goal with the group, on average spent 33 minutes on the assignment and reported feeling a lot closer to realizing their goal.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<strong>Telling people about your goal makes in less likely that you will complete your goal<\/strong> because the good feeling of sharing your goal with others and the resulting positive feedback tricks your mind into thinking you have in a sense completed the goal.\u00a0 <strong>The mind mistakes the talking for the doing!<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0So how are we able to harness the power of community to propel us to our goals through encouragement and accountability but not sabotage our work toward the goal?\u00a0 Sivers suggests:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Resist the temptation to share our goals.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Be aware that the mind can often mistake talking for doing.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">If you need to share it &#8211; state it in a way which doesn\u2019t give you any satisfaction.\u00a0 This may go like:\u00a0 I really want to have this project completed in 8 days, so I have to accomplish these tasks each day &#8211; can you check on me to see if I\u2019m doing that?\u00a0 Or \u201cI really need to get my weight down, and I need to exercise 20 minutes a day &#8211; can you help light a fire under me when I waver?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">So what do you think? \u00a0In your experience, have you found this to be true?<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n____________________________<br \/>\nDerek Sivers, TEDGlobal, July 2010<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Conventional wisdom tells us it is a good idea to share our goals with others for the purpose of vocalizing them and soliciting help with accountability to help keep us on track.
