With effective problem-solving tools, you can employ the one which is best suited to help you resolve the situation and <strong>leverage it for success<\/strong>.\u00a0 It is important to realize that one size doesn\u2019t fit all.\u00a0 While some tools may have worked wonderfully many times before, there are some issues which despite employing our favorite tool &#8211; it just doesn\u2019t get the job done!<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the best tool may be a new tool &#8211; a different way of seeing the issue.\u00a0 From this different perspective, it is possible to see opportunities and solutions that were not apparent with other problem-solving tools.<\/p>\n<p>Reverse engineering is a term that refers to the process of starting with a widget and then deconstructing it carefully <strong>to see how and why it works<\/strong> &#8211; starting with what is and then breaking it down to its constituents and processes.\u00a0 It starts with the finished product and works backward to the drawing board.<\/p>\n<p>We can do the same thing with a number of the challenges we face every day &#8211; place a challenge in front of us and begin to deconstruct it.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We ask ourselves: \u201cWhat needed to happen for this problem to occur?\u201d\u00a0 Who are the players? What are the circumstances and how does\u00a0it all work together to create the issue?<br \/>\nFrom this perspective, it gives us some different insight as to where the issue(s) lie and then an indication of the specific areas to address.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, you want to complete a new task.\u00a0 You go through the process of planning and assessing what you need to do to see the goal accomplished.\u00a0 Next, you ask what will cause me to see the opposite of my desired results?\u00a0 This can be a formidable list, but you can then rank it by likelihood and severity of the impact.\u00a0\u00a0 Review this list.\u00a0 Is there anything on this list that potentially needs to be addressed, managed or planned for in your plan?<br \/>\nThis process can be a powerful tool when you are stumped or just need a different perspective on the challenge at hand.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Tips for Reverse Engineering Problem-Solving<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">1) Be clear about the presenting challenge.\u00a0 What is it?\u00a0 Write it down.<br \/>\n2) Reverse Engineer the problem by asking:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">What can I do or not do to cause the problem?<br \/>\nWhat can I do or not do to get the opposite of what I have set out as a goal?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">3) Allow the reverse problem to generate ideas.\u00a0 As with all brainstorming, let the ideas flow, and you can evaluate them next.<br \/>\n4) Evaluate the reversed ideas by reversing (again) them to serve your intended goal.<br \/>\n5) If the idea contributes positively to the original goal or challenge &#8211; keep it.\u00a0 If it doesn\u2019t &#8211; discard it.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Here\u2019s a very simple example:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>You have a retail business, and you want to cultivate return customers.\u00a0 To reverse engineer this situation ask:<br \/>\n<strong>What do I have to do to make sure customers don\u2019t come back?<\/strong><br \/>\nYou may develop a list of things like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t acknowledge them when the enter the store.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the employees aren\u2019t available to assist them.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t answer telephone inquiries.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure employees don\u2019t know anything about the products.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the employees are rude.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From this list, you reverse engineer:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Every customer is greeted in a warm, friendly manner when they enter the store.<\/li>\n<li>Employees understand that serving the customer is their job.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure telephone calls are answered promptly by a human being.<\/li>\n<li>Equip employees to answer questions and make informed recommendations.<\/li>\n<li>Employees are friendly, polite and attentive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Remember to use good brainstorming techniques!\u00a0 By reversing the engineering, we can see solutions to our challenge from a different perspective, and you can discover a number of potential solutions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Creative problem solving is an essential tool in anyone&#8217;s toolbox!
