{"id":7092,"date":"2012-07-18T08:26:58","date_gmt":"2012-07-18T15:26:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iamsignificant.ca\/?p=7092"},"modified":"2018-01-23T17:02:35","modified_gmt":"2018-01-23T17:02:35","slug":"what-motivates-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iamsignificant.ca\/home\/success-with-significance\/what-motivates-us\/","title":{"rendered":"What Motivates Us?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Daniel Pink was voted one of the top 50 influential business thinkers in the world in 2011 and his book<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/dp\/1594484805\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Drive: The Surprising Truth of What Motivates Us<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> capitalizes on 50 years of behavioral science to reveal some surprising insight as to what indeed actually motivates us.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\">For straightforward, mechanical tasks, a financial reward is very effective at increasing performance. \u00a0Interesting enough, for the tasks that require higher-level cognitive skills, innovation, and creativity, financial incentives actually impeded performance. \u00a0So if the stick and carrot aren&#8217;t effective at inspiring performance with higher cognitive levels &#8211; how can we inspire performance in a way that releases innovation, creativity, and productivity?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\">Pink suggests a more effective way to motivate. \u00a0The reality is to some degree money is a motivator but to a point &#8211; the key then is to <strong>pay well enough that money isn&#8217;t the issue<\/strong>. \u00a0This means the employee isn&#8217;t thinking about money but is thinking about the work. \u00a0With this base issue being addressed then these <strong>three areas<\/strong> are key to better performance:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\"><strong>Autonomy<\/strong> &#8211; our desire to be self-directed. \u00a0This is key if you want your <div class=\"simplePullQuote right\"><p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: medium\">&#8220;It is doing a job you love and being given the tools\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: medium\">and freedom to love it well <\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: medium\">that inspires great performance.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif\"><\/p>\n<\/div>employees to be engaged. \u00a0This differs from managing in that managing doesn&#8217;t produce engagement only compliance.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\"><strong>Mastery<\/strong> &#8211; is our personal desire to get better at something, to do something well, and this provides a sense of satisfaction.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\"><strong>Purpose<\/strong> &#8211; meaning is important! \u00a0People want to give their lives for more than the bottom line, something that is bigger than themselves.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\">Have a look at the video below and while you are watching consider:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\">What are you\u00a0passionate\u00a0about?
