Christ as a Light – A Celtic Prayer

Posted on January 4, 2015February 14, 2018 by Michael Rose

The following is an old Celtic prayer.  It has been called the Christ Canticle and was often a part of Celtic Christian liturgy.  I find this prayer to be a great way to start my day, especially when the day ahead could be stressful.

I appreciate the reminder of  Jesus’ word that He will never leave us or forsake us.  Moreover that Christ is closer to us, more present to us, holding us in a far greater, complete way than I often think or feel.

Slowly and with intention, read this prayer being open to being surprised and comforted by the reality of God’s divine presence.  Nothing to hype up or conjure.  It is more like waking up, to realize what has been true all along.

Christ, as a light
illumine and guide me.
Christ, as a shield

overshadow me.
Christ under me;
Christ over me;
Christ beside me
on my left and my right.

This day be within and without me,
lowly and meek, yet all-powerful.
Be in the heart of each to whom I speak;
in the mouth of each who speaks unto me.
This day be within and without me,
lowly and meek, yet all-powerful.

Christ as a light;
Christ as a shield;
Christ beside me
on my left and my right.
