Mend My Heart – Visio Divina

Posted on October 13, 2020October 13, 2020 by Michael Rose

What is Visio Divina

Visio Divina or ‘Sacred Seeing’ is an ancient form of Christian contemplative prayer and is a method of listening for the Spirit.  Using sacred images (Visio) of sacred images landscape, art, nature scenes) opening our hearts and imaginations to what the Spirit may be saying to us.

Context

Kintsugi is a 400-year old Japanese artform/technique of repairing broken works of pottery with gold. Instead of trying to hide the cracks and breaks, Kintsugi highlights and adorns the break with gold to brings attention to the repair.  The idea of ‘beauty from ashes’ comes to mind.  It acknowledges and repairs the broken parts of the pottery and in doing so creates something new, lovely and beautiful.

The Reflection

In a quiet place and a comfortable posture, take a couple of cleansing deep breaths and gently direct your attention to the picture of the Kintsugi heart above.

  • Prayerfully and gently open your heart and imagination to the Holy Spirit to speak to you.
  • Consider the areas of brokenness in your own life.
  • With the help of the Holy Spirit can you imagine what healing and wholeness might look like for you?
  • Can you imagine the Spirits work towards the beauty – the gold – for your wholeness?
